History of Pretoria Theosophical Lodge

    · 1904 The Lodge Charter is dated 1 December 1904 The Founding Members were Henri Dykman, Lodge President and Alexander James Gough. The Nederland’s Section had asked Henri Dykman to introduce Theosophy to the Dutch-speaking people of Pretoria. He gave a lecture at the Masonic Hall in Pretoria on Theosophy that was attended by at least 200 people. Mr Dykman was an imposing athletic six-foot figure who spoke fluently in French, German, English and Dutch.

    · 1908 J. Bruno Bischoff joined in August 1908 and in his “History of Pretoria Lodge” (written in 1954 for the Golden jubilee), he mentioned that he attended the first lecture given by Mr Dykman and that Lodge meetings were held on Sunday mornings at Mr Dykman’s house. He also mentioned two other members; Cyril Gyde and Walter Bond with whom he became great friends. He also stated that there were about a dozen other members at that time.
